The third annual Coupeville Lions Scholarship Auction was a huge success, we raised $22,000 for deserving young men and women at Coupeville High School! Thanks goes to all of the individuals and local businesses who donated auction items, community bakers who donated desserts for the dessert auction and the businesses who donated food and supplies:
The American Red Cross Island County Chapter would like to thank the many local businesses and those who attended the 10th annual Real Heroes Breakfast that was held March 4 at the Elks Lodge.
I just had a phone call from the Breast Cancer Foundation. The solicitor said I had donated $20 last year and would I repeat the donation? I didn’t recall having donated, but I said OK, and when someone else came on the line to verify my address, she used one I haven’t lived at for five years. I said, “I haven’t lived there for some time,” and she said, “The donation was two years ago.”
By turning quotes into headlines on your front page (News-Times, May 14), it’s clear the newspaper is more interested in creating news than reporting it. By definition, a quote standing alone has no context, so it is immediately misleading for anyone who reads the headline but not the story.
Regarding Richard Mack’s appeal for the pope’s resignation (Letters, May 7):
Thank you for doing the article on rate increases Puget Sound Energy is trying to get through. They are also trying to sell the company to investment companies in Canada and Australia. If this happens the outflow of money from this state and country has to be huge. The rate increases will become higher and more frequent to make up the $5 billion shortfall they say they need to keep up with expansion.
I wanted to say a special word of thanks to those who helped with the fundraiser, “The Empire Gives Back,” over the Holland Happening weekend. I do not have the names of some helpers but you know who you are: Special thanks to Barbara Johnson (and all her Red Cross volunteers) and Erika and Jesse Miller (and Navy friends).
Wow, I guess it does no good to leave town for awhile. I am shocked to see the back and forth opinions over the Oak Harbor Football League.
Bravo to Linda Haddon for her stand on the Steilacoom II ferry (News-Times, April 23). It seems that no one in the state government can hear what anyone is saying about that boat. If you have a boat that has to cancel trips constantly, what good is it. Might as well just flush the dollars for the Steilacoom II down the toilet or use them for green compost.
I couldn’t agree more with many of the runners I met concerning the Whidbey Island Marathon. I’ve finished all seven of them and it simply wasn’t the same fun marathon this year, not because of a little confusion as to the route, but because of the finish.
Spring has sprung, the birds are nesting and guarding their turf. The amusement offered to the observer of seeing small blackbirds attacking majestic eagles because they have crossed territorial boundaries reminds me of the Oak Harbor and Coupeville school districts’ efforts to protect their respective territories.
Congratulations to the Oak Harbor Wildcat football team for remaining undefeated (9-0) for the regular season. I was fortunate enough…
We absolutely must add Bert Speir to our board of hospital commissioners. His breadth and depth of experience and expertise,…
