As a Greenbank teacher, parent, and author, I’m so grateful to have the Coupeville Library as an area resource. It provides numerous services including Internet access, book searches (even beyond their catalog), and support for the kids and teachers in our small school district.
Everyone must’ve been good this year at North Whidbey Help House, because Santa was very generous during “Christmas in July.” We received over 6,700 food items and just over $16,000 in monetary donations. With everyone struggling with the high cost of food, fuel, just about everything, we are simply awestruck by the generosity of this community.
In the 1970s, deregulating savings and loan institutions led to a meltdown and a bailout costing taxpayers billions of dollars.
Local elections are the time when a citizen’s vote has the most impact but, come on folks, the best candidate for office is not determined by the number of their political signs. Island County and the 10th Legislative District has a very powerful state senator in the person of Mary Margaret Haugen.
In reference to the “Fire district seeks less this time” article in Saturday’s paper, I feel I must respond.
In the last election, Tim Knue, the then opponent of Barbara Bailey, sent out a flier to the voters in Island County and elsewhere accusing Barbara of all kinds of outrageous positions on issues and flat-out lies on her voting record. There were statements by him that were the exact opposite of her actual position or vote. He sent it out so close to the election date that Barbara had very little time to counter his outright lies before the actual election.
I read with regret the sad commentary by Jim and Jean Gervais about “mindset” as it applies to Craig Platt, candidate for the Superior Court bench.
Books and libraries have been part of my life as long as I can remember. A first port of call in any new place I’m in as a visitor or a resident, is the local library. I was the happy owner of a library card within my first few days in Coupeville, and have done my best to keep up their circulation figures for the past 17 years.
I have known all four candidates for Island County Commissioner, District 1, for many years and count them all as friends. I believe that in terms of qualifications Phil Bakke stands out as a proven leader and has the knowledge to best meet the needs of Island County.
Whidbey Island voters have a unique opportunity this fall to select an extremely qualified candidate to be Island County commissioner, while insuring that all Island County communities will have a strong and open voice in County decision-making.
Mac McDowell and Phil Bakke will tell you they have done a great job of keeping taxes lower, but when you look at your utility bill in Oak Harbor, you know differently. The tight knit group of leaders, who want to annex for development, are bankers who sell property and real estate agents who stand to gain financially or are somehow tied to the above.
Our Constitution guarantees that every person charged with a crime will have legal representation. The job of this legal representative (defense attorney) is to speak for the defendant and represent his/her interests in court. This means, even if we are guilty we still get someone to stand with us in a court of law to ensure that our rights are protected. It is the job of the jury to decide guilt.
The controversy over the accident potential zone in Dugualla Bay carries with it some concerns that I believe should be brought to the public’s attention. How did this emergent change in the zoning come about? What benefit does it provide and to whom? Why is this APZ treated different from the Boyer property? All good questions, and in some cases, can only be speculated on at this time.
