Information from a recent refresher course for DAV volunteer drivers should help “Mrs. Robinson” of Coupeville (Letters, Aug. 3).
Driving the speed limit does not give anyone the right to ignore the simple rule, “Keep right except to pass.” The leftmost lane is for passing, and “cruisers” can be cited. This rule especially applies to passing lanes. After you let faster traffic pass and your lane ends, then you have the right to merge back.
That applies to the second question as well: Drivers in through lanes should let drivers merge from lanes that end. If you have been “almost hit by people cutting in,” either you were trying to keep someone from merging or you were just not paying sufficient attention to the other driver.
A collision is an expensive way to determine who’s right or wrong, so don’t sweat anybody’s morality but your own.
