Regarding Bill Fischer’s letter dated Aug. 1, in response to the Whidbey News-Times “coffin photo” of July 25.

I sincerely hope that the family of Patrick Wade viewed this as a tribute to their son. Mr. Fischer correctly states that the photo of “the flag-draped coffin of a returning serviceman speaks more than words can tell.” This is exactly the point. We must be made aware of the danger our young men and women are facing. Because there is no “draft,” not as many of us have family members serving. It is easy to forget the brave and dedicated young people who are bearing the burden for the rest of us.

My prayers and sympathy go out to the mothers of their family members who are being crippled and dying in this horrendous “war.” We need these stories and pictures to remind us daily of the situation in Iraq and the surrounding areas.

If the family of Patrick Wade was offended, I do apologize. I felt the pictures and the article were a necessary recognition of Patrick Wade and all servicemen dedicating their lives for us.
