Four years ago my husband went to pick up our granddaughter at middle school. He found her sitting on the floor sorting trash. He took her by the hand and told the teacher she would not be back. At the time she was reading at preschool level. Also, her eyes were downcast and empty. She was a very unhappy child and had threatened suicide. Today she is happy, reading at almost a fifth grade level and has a seventh grade spelling book.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank some people for Rachel’s transformation. Mr. Nickolatus, the teacher at the Whidbey Christian School located at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, has worked so patiently with Rachel and never given up. Cindy Derting helps Rachel out of the goodness of her heart. Joyce King, Rachel’s reading specialist. has brought her so far. Jackie Larsen was Rachel’s first 4-H leader and helped to socialize Rachel, make her feel good about herself and learn to care for animals.
And last, the children in 4-H, they are thoughtful, helpful and kind.
What a marvelous group of human beings!
Thank you all,
Sharon Pursel
