Serve the mayor, or the people?

I was surprised to see that the new mayor fired several key people as his first acts in office. If those people weren’t doing their jobs well, that was appropriate, but I don’t have the sense that was the case.

If they were doing their jobs well, the most likely rationale for firing them would be to replace them with Mayor Scott Dudley loyalists. That smacks of empire building. I am concerned to know whether the city administration is there to serve the citizenry, or the mayor.

I hope it is there to serve the people. I’m not sure that it is.
