I have to admit I am a little confused as to our priorities here on Island County and why we thought it was appropriate or needed to ask the state of Washington to fund something as frivolous as the request from Island Transit.
We are cutting teachers’ salaries, cutting health care for the poor and disabled as well as other support systems for the needy, trying to update our local hospital and yet the state can give almost $1 million to help build a transit park and preserve native grass?
Nor is it easy to understand how this can be a priority for a transit system that claimed they would have to cut services if we didn’t pass an increase in sales tax to keep them afloat.
Now there are rumors that the Navy would like a transit route to help get their sailors to and from the base and into downtown Oak Harbor and Island Transit has chosen not to be accommodating of this request. But let’s build a transit park and save the grass. Priorities?
