There is a sadness that hangs over Earth Day 2017— Saturday, April 22. The usual Whidbey celebration on Earth Day itself was “scrubbed” this year, and I must admit the decision fits my deep concerns for current challenges to environmental science and policies.

Even so, Whidbey’s Earth and Ocean Month 2017 schedule is still bursting with events. See whidbeyearthday.org

There are many opportunities to learn about, share with others and champion stewardship of our earth.

I am especially heartened to also have opportunities for reflection on the schedule.

I’ll be using this year’s Earth and Ocean Month to collect my thoughts, settle my spirit and share encouragements with others. I hope my future environmental actions will be steady, civil, visionary — even inspired — and I need time for reflection.

As a member of the Greening Congregations Collaborative — GCC — one of many organizations providing opportunities this month, I encourage you to take advantage of the GCC offerings for reflection, learning and prayer: Meditation — The Way of Sorrows with All Creation at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 12 at Langley Methodist; Movie Before the Flood at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 18 at St. Hubert’s; Talking Tips for Tough Topics at 7 p.m. on April 20 at Ott and Murphy Tasting Room; Earth Day Concert at 7 p.m. on April 22 at Langley Methodist; and Prayer: 9 Days of Prayer to Honor Creation (a booklet) is available at St. Hubert’s.

Everyone can make a difference, using our own talents and tapping our many relationships. I’ll be using these offerings as a time to prepare for the work ahead. I hope you will join me.
