Editor,
As I was reading Saturday morning’s newspaper, I was surprised to see the article about the Navy’s Search and Rescue airlift of the pregnant woman to Providence hospital in Everett on March 23.
That woman was my daughter-in-law, Ashley Stephens. I was with her at the hospital when they were called.
First, I must say what a wonderful job the nurses in the labor and delivery ward did, as well as Ashley’s obstetrician, Dr. Melissa Chen.
Second, how lucky we are that we have SAR at the ready. That Wednesday evening was a stormy night with strong winds and rain.
If anyone could fly through that mess it would be a SAR helicopter pilot and crew. My former husband was a SAR Corpsman stationed here at Whidbey Naval Air Station from 1999-2002.
I made sure to mention that as well as the fact that Ashley, my grandson, and I were supposed to be flying out the next morning to my son Isaiah Stephens’ graduation from Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.
When they asked what field he was going into and we replied he was a SEAL candidate, they were favorably impressed.
You gotta love the brotherhood.
