Chewie, we’re home

Abandoned dog finds loving family at last

Almost a year after his abandonment, a beloved Whidbey pooch has found a home.

Chewbacca, a young mastiff mix, has been adopted from the Whidbey Animal Improvement Foundation in Coupeville, where he has been living since May 2021.

Animal shelter manager Shari Bibich confirmed that the dog was taken to a loving new home.

“He waited for so long, and we were all scratching our heads as to why he was being passed by,” she said. “Then the perfect couple inquired about him, came to meet, and it was love for both Chewy and his new family.”

Chewbacca was first brought to the animal shelter after he was discovered, scared and emaciated, in a field near Morris Road and Highway 20 with a bag of dog food and a bowl of water.

The dog’s former owner was charged with animal cruelty in the second degree last July after Safeway security footage showed him purchasing a bag of dog food in the same brand and flavor that Chewbacca was found with shortly before the dog was discovered.

Bibich said in Chewbacca’s new family, he will be “so loved, as he deserved to be after all he has been through.”
