Community feast to celebrate the military

There’s a warm meal waiting for everybody at Oak Harbor’s Military Appreciation Picnic.

Whether you wear the uniform or support those who do, there’s a warm meal waiting for everybody at Oak Harbor’s Military Appreciation Picnic.

According to Navy League Co-President Beth Munns, 2,000 pulled pork sandwiches and 1,000 hot dogs to be exact, for a total of 600 pounds of meat on the grill. Other offerings, all free to guests, include potato salad, coleslaw, chips, soda, juice, sweet treats and more.

The event will take place from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday on the west side of Windjammer Park and is hosted by the Oak Harbor Chamber and the Oak Harbor Navy League, which were able to put together a giant feast thanks to local businesses, community members and volunteers who are contributing with food, monetary donations and time to celebrate the military.

Families are welcome to check out the over 30 booths in attendance, which will also bring family-friendly activities like crafts, sports games and even a scientific demonstration.

Canine guests — on leash — and enthusiasts might enjoy a demonstration by the base’s military working dogs.

Full Spectrum, a Pacific Northwest ‘70s and ‘80s variety rock band, will play live after local ensemble, the All Community Band, performs the National Anthem.

The picnic has been a yearly tradition since 2003, Munns said. Navy League Vice President Dave Johnson said last year’s event attracted 2,500 people, and it’s an opportunity for residents and businesses to thank current and retired sailors and their families.

Munns believes that members of the Navy and non-military Oak Harbor residents should consider themselves as part of one community. During the height of the pandemic, she said, Navy sailors and staff kept many people employed thanks to their support.

“They’re a big part of our economy,” she said.

Furthermore, it’s a reason to throw a fun party where kids who live in the barracks can make new friends, she said.

Munns recommends people show up hungry.

“Don’t eat breakfast,” she said.
