The Island County Master Gardeners and WSU Extension are presenting a seminar by Dr. Martin F. Quigley titled “Native to What?” on Saturday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Pacific Rim Institute, 180 Parker Road in Coupeville. There is a suggested donation of $15 which will benefit the Master Gardeners programs and projects.

Dr. Quigley’s presentation will address fundamental issues related to native plants. Gardeners tend to prefer native plants and often confront the question of whether native plants are superior to introduced selections from other parts of the world. Landscapes and habitat change over time with natural and human activity. People have always moved plants as they migrated.

Dr. Quigley is director of Chester M. Alter Arboretum at the University of Denver, and Associate Professor of Ecology in the Department of Biological Sciences. He is also an arborist, horticulturist, and a licensed landscape architect. He has studied, researched and taught extensively in various fields related to ecology.
