Free hair styling event returns to Oak Harbor

Kids can start the school year with a confidence boost.

To Wismine D’Avilar, the dean of students at Oak Harbor High School, there are few things like feeling good and looking good — and there is no better way to start the school year with a confidence boost.

Her passion for empowering women inspired the Back 2 School event, a day where boys and girls from Pre-K to 12th grade can get their hair done by local professionals for free before going back to school.

The second annual hairstyling event will take place 1-6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1 at the Boys & Girls Club in Oak Harbor. D’Avilar is the CEO of Heels & Confidence Whidbey branch, a faith-based mentorship organization that is putting together the event in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club and All Things New, a shoe boutique.

The event is first come first serve and is open to kids of all colors with different hair types, who are asked to come in with their hair washed, detangled and air dried. The options include braids, crochets, fades, lock retwists, trims and more.

While they wait for their turn, kids can participate in coloring activities led by Amanda Refuge, owner of All Things New. The best art will be rewarded with a pair of shoes.

Last year, D’Avilar said, 79 kids walked out of the club with a fresh style and a smile.

Heels & Confidence is a faith-based mentorship program that helps women of all ages find their inner beauty and overcome life challenges with faith and confidence.
