Holland Happening returns

The 53rd annual Holland Happening Parade and Festival will take place April 30 and May 1.

This weekend, the city of Oak Harbor is going Dutch.

The 53rd annual Holland Happening Parade and Festival will take place April 30 and May 1 with a series of events, games and family fun celebrating the community’s Dutch heritage in downtown Oak Harbor.

Many beloved events will be held, including the parade, street fair and Klompen canal races, as the festival returns to an almost full-size operation, said Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Vicki Graham.

Only the carnival rides will be absent this year because of staffing problems, Graham said, though local businesses and nonprofits will still provide old-fashioned carnival games. There will even be a dunk booth, with Graham, some Oak Harbor city council members and others from the community braving the splash zone.

“It’s going to be a great weekend,” Graham said. “I think we all deserve to have a little bit of fun.”

The street fair, which will feature food, art and crafts from local vendors, will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 30 and May 1 at Windjammer Park. The parade will take place at 11 a.m. April 30 and follow its traditional route down Bayshore Drive. Gene Phelps, the 100-year-old owner of Gene’s Art and Frame on Pioneer Way, will be this year’s grand marshal.

City residents may also enter the Klompen canal races, which will take place at 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on April 30 and 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on May 1, with an additional 5 p.m. Sunday race for local businesses. Those wishing to participate may purchase Klompen shoes from the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce for $7.
