Air Force Airman Curtis J. Ducken graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airman Ducken, a 2010 graduate of Oak Harbor High School, is now at Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, Texas, training as a turbo prop mechanic.
A1C SCOTT GENTRY recently graduated from the Defense Language Institute and was elected out of hundreds of candidates to receive the Commandants Award. He received the award for his exemplary leadership, military bearing and his academic performance as he graduated in the top of his class. He also volunteered hundreds of hours in the community. It is the highest honor awarded at the school, for which he received the Army Achievement medal, a rare feat for an Airman. He is the son of Terry and Linda Parker and the grandson of George Lam of Oak Harbor.
Air Force Airman 1st Class Brandon C. Urtasun graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.
He is the son of Frank and Christina Urtasun of Vanderwell Road, Oak Harbor. Urtasun received an associate degree in 2009 from Skagit Valley College, Mount Vernon.
Army Pvt. CANDICE M. GILMAN has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.
Gilman graduated in 1999 from Oak Harbor High School.
Navy Seaman PHILLIP M. GAREY, son of Kathryn L. and Terrence D. Garey of Oak Harbor, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, Garey completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
Garey is a 2008 graduate of Oak Harbor High School of Oak Harbor.
