The Oak Harbor Yacht Club Buccaneers are expecting more than 100 children for the 36th annual Kids Fishing Derby at the Oak Harbor Marina Saturday.
The Buccaneers, the philanthropic arm of the yacht club, will be dressed in their pirate garb to help children bait a hook and offer tips to entice what might be lurking in the depths below.
Normally, it’s just “dock” perch or sculpin, said Mark Szypula, a yacht club member helping organize the event.
“Every once in a while, people will put on a sinker and fish the bottom and catch a dog fish,” Szypula said. “It can get pretty exciting.”
The event is free and open to children up to age 12. Kids under 10 must be accompanied by an adult and wear a life jacket.
Children are asked to bring their own poles, tackle and life jacket, however bait will be provided. Some gear will be available for those who don’t have it.
Registration is 10-11 a.m. at the marina entrance. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the “F” dock with first-place prizes awarded for the largest fish caught by a boy and girl.
There will be prizes for a variety of other categories.
“It’s really just a fun event for kids to come out and get them having fun with pirates,” Szypula said. “It gets them interested in fishing and the environment.”
