Library to host online mochi-making class

The program is March 17 and is sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community.

Sno-Isle Libraries is putting on an online mochi making event for kids and families next week.

The program will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 17 and is sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community.

The making of mochi, or Japanese rice cakes, is an important News Years tradition in Japan. It brings together generations of families and community members to wish one another good health and prosperity in the coming year.

“While we cannot gather together in person quite yet, there has never been a more important year to draw strength from mochi!” the library website says.

During the event, members of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community will demonstrate modern mochi-making methods and share family traditions centered on the food.

The Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community is a cultural organization dedicated to honoring the first Japanese immigrants to America, promoting a better understanding of America’s diverse communities through education and preserving an accurate history of Japanese Americans.

Registration for this event can be completed on the Sno-Isle Libraries website.
