As a high school senior was handcuffed by an officer for causing a fatal drunk driving accident last week, a massive crowd of teenagers stood by watching.

The grisly scene, involving four injured students and one in critical condition, was part of a mock car crash organized by Students Against Drunk Driving.

The event was timed for Oak Harbor High School’s prom, which took place the following night, May 30.

SADD adviser Cynthia Allen said the mock crash hasn’t been done in five or six years, but the group was determined to bring it back.

“We want kids to take away the seriousness of drinking and driving. We hope that by seeing an upperclassman arrested and their friends injured in the other car, it will hit home that this could happen to them,” Allen said.

In the afternoon, students lined the bus loop outside of the new career and technical building to watch the events unfold.

Four fake-bloodied teens were slumped inside a wrecked Buick, while the driver of the other vehicle was pulled out unscathed. In the scenario, the driver had been drinking.

The Oak Harbor Police Department, Oak Harbor Fire Department, Navy Region Northwest Fire and Emergency Services and EMS crews were on-hand to show students a typical response to a serious collision.

Crews carefully removed the students from the car for treatment, but were unable to revive one of the teenagers. Emcee Rich Cuevas of Oak Harbor Fire and Rescue gave a minute-by-minute explanation of the rescue response.

Afterwards, students were invited to approach the wreck scene and sit inside the vehicles, for a closer look at the damage.
