The seventh annual island-wide Book Groups Gathering will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m. at St. Hubert Catholic Church in Langley.

The arrival of “The Nutcracker” means that it’s holiday time, and the Whidbey Playhouse has a spirited production in store for Oak Harbor.
Choreographed by 19-year ballet instructor Diane Geragotelis, “The Nutcracker” tells the familiar story of how, after a Christmas Eve party, a little girl named Clara helps a magic nutcracker battle some mischievous mice. She then travels to an enchanted realm ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy.
The annual “Greening” of Coupeville takes place Saturday, Dec. 4, again offering a wide-range of fun, family activities.
The highlight of the day’s events is the Christmas parade, which begins at 4 p.m. The parade, which features a throng of community groups and an appearance by Santa Claus, will start on South Main Street and go through town before ending up on Front Street in Coupeville’s historic downtown.
People can see how artists worldwide envision Jesus’ birth during the annual “Display of Mangers,” Saturday, Dec. 5 at Concordia Lutheran Church.
Over 200 nativities will be on display from such countries as Israel, Germany, Guatemala and Italy.

Today, 20 years after the end of the Cold War they are flaking, subdued images of a bygone era. Now, artificial thunder echoes through the hills as a Bulgarian M1117 Guardian armored security vehicle runs the training course, mowing down targets with fire from its mounted heavy machine gun.
