Playhouse Dental buys candy for troops

Next week, Oak Harbor children can turn their Halloween candy into cash for a good cause.

For three days after Halloween, Playhouse Dental will buy Halloween candy at a dollar a pound, then donate the candy to nonprofit Move America Forward to be used in care packages for soldiers serving overseas.

Playhouse Dental has been participating in Halloween candy buy backs for around eight years, though this is the first year it will partner with Move America Forward. This is also Playhouse’s first year partnering with Oak Harbor Freight, which will transport all the collected candy from the dental offices to the nonprofit headquarters in Sacramento, California.

Playhouse employee Stacey Walcheff said the dental office, which has locations in Oak Harbor and Anacortes, typically collects over 300 pounds of candy each year. Walcheff said the annual event is a win-win because it provides a service to U.S. troops while helping kids avoid overindulging on sugary sweets.

“Everybody’s doing something together for the troops and for the kids,” she said.

Kids can sell their candy at Playhouse Dental offices, located at 651 SE Maylor St. in Oak Harbor and 1204 18th St. in Anacortes, Nov. 1-3.
