Five local bands are bringing a new meaning to the idiom “raise the roof” next weekend.

On March 5, five punk, metal, hardcore and thrash bands will play an all ages concert to help raise money to restore the Roller Barn in Oak Harbor, especially the aging building’s roof.

The concert starts at 6 p.m. and will take place at the Roller Barn, where skating will also be available. Tickets cost $10 at the door.

The Roller Barn was built in 1912 and became a roller rink in 1950. It housed the Boys and Girls Club from 1994 until 2019, when long-time Whidbey resident James Croft purchased the building with the intent of restoring and preserving it.

One of Whidbey’s longest-lasting punk rock bands, Potbelly, will be taking the Roller Barn stage. The band was formed in the mid-90s when all of its original members were teenagers, and over the decades, the musicians have weathered the ebbs and flows of the punk scene on the island. Jason Rodger, the band’s lead vocalist and one of its original members, said band members are excited about an opportunity to perform an all ages show again, something they have been missing during the pandemic.

“Potbelly has been a band for 27 years in this area, and we’ve never gone this long without playing all ages here,” he said. “Glad to take part in it.”
