Tonight, Oak Harbor will revisit the glamour, jazz and secrecy of the Roaring ‘20s. It’s the kind of scene you might pine for after reading “The Great Gatsby” or seeing the first 10 minutes of “Some Like It Hot.”

The Boys and Girls Club is throwing a 1920s party for adults as a fundraiser to cover the group’s annual expenses. It will be modeled after a speakeasy from the roaring Prohibition era; back then, speakeasies ranged from classy restaurants to underworld dens where people sought alcohol.

Club director Peg Fenstermaker said there’s a password written on the ticket for people to enter the upstairs Roller Barn inside the club.

The room will be designed to look like a nightclub, which they have named “Copa Cabarna.” It includes a mock jail for people to “arrest” their dates and an area for old-fashioned photography.

Fenstermaker says guests will fashion themselves after characters from the era, including flappers, bootleggers, mobsters and molls.

“In our research of the 1920s we found out Chinese food was really big back then, so we’ll serve those dishes,” she said.

The 21-and-over event will also offer drinks and heavy hors d’oeuvres. Happy hour and free dance lessons by local instructor Dan Branscum are from 6 to 7 p.m.

For entertainment, the band Dillinger’s Clambake will play swing music and organizers also gathered a few local vaudeville acts, such as magician Jim Jolly. As the night continues, there will be dance and costume contests.

Tickets are $25 and all the proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Oak Harbor. People can buy tickets by calling Whidbey Printers at 675-8837 or they can be purchased at the door.

The party is from 6 to 11 p.m. and the Boys and Girls Club is located at 98 NE Barron Dr.
