Nathan Saunders spends much of his time helping others and improving the community. In recognition of his service, Saunders was presented the Eagle Scout Award, scouting’s highest honor, Saturday in a special ceremony at the Navy’s Can-do-Inn at Rocky Point.

A member of Boy Scout Troop 4065, the 18-year-old scout earned 21 merit badges, served as a leader in his troop and completed a six-week-long service project at Deception Pass State Park.

Saunders organized about 30 volunteers, including fellow scouts, youth and adults to help with his task to refurbish the picnic tables in Rosario Park. The group worked together to disassemble, salvage parts and reassemble several tables, using material donated by the park.

Several park picnic tables were in such disrepair that they had been pulled from the park. Thanks to Saunders’ efforts, park-goers can enjoy safe, sturdy picnic tables at Rosario park this upcoming spring and summer seasons.

A senior at Coupeville High School, Saunders participates in the Running Start program at Skagit Valley College in Oak Harbor.

Following his high school graduation, Saunders would like to pursue his AA degree then serve a two year mission with his church. Upon returning from his missionary service, Saunders plans to return to school to pursue his interest in the medical field or dentistry.

Saunders has been a member of Troop 4065, chartered by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, since 2004.
