Oak Harbor High School DECA students took over Safeway Thursday, Jan. 20, to get some real hands-on experience in the business world. The kids rotated through 14 stations ranging from the floral and bakery departments to the check stands and Starbucks.

“Everything we’ve done in the classroom they’re applying here,” DECA advisor Eric Peterson said.

This was the fourth year Peterson’s students visited the store to learn management skills. In addition to working with store staff, the kids manned a collection booth for the Ronald McDonald House, an organization that supports ill children and their families.

Peterson said the students alternate raising money for both the Ronald McDonald House and the March of Dimes and generally collect between $400 and $500 each year.
