The Bells of Whidbey are back to bring heavenly sounds for a good cause.

The only English handbell community ensemble on Whidbey Island will be performing at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 11 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, located at 555 South East Regatta Drive in Oak Harbor.

A group of 12 volunteers, directed by Cheryl Waide, will ring on five octaves of English handbells and handchimes, accompanied by the sound of a piano, a violin, a guitar and a singer.

The theme for the group’s fourth concert is “Sounds of Peace.” The concert will include pieces like “Dona Nobis Pacem,” “What a Wonderful World,” “If I Had a Hammer” and “Peace in Our Time.”

According to Waide, there will be about 60 bells — some offered by local churches — which will perform a blend of upbeat and calming songs. Each ringer has two to three bells to use, and is assigned as many notes to play. Each performance is a challenge that requires multiple people to come together to create something beautiful.

Admissions are by donation. Past concerts have benefited SPiN Cafe, Gifts From the Heart Food Bank, and Island County Habitat for Humanity. This weekend, monetary donations will be devoted to the Garage of Blessings in Oak Harbor.
