Whidbey Island Youth Orchestra and Community Orchestra will hold their winter concert at the South Whidbey High School auditorium Friday, March 2 at 7 p.m.

The Youth Orchestra will be under the direction of Siri Bardarson. They will play a piece called “Breaking Glass,” which was composed by Bardarson, and “Concerto in E Minor.”

The Community Orchestra, under the direction of Chris Harshman, will play the second movement of Haydn’s “Symphony Number 100,” Dvorak’s “Slavonic Dance Number 1,” Beethoven’s “Fidelio” overture, Mozart’s “March in D Major” and “Ship Tunes,” a medley of nautically-themed music arranged and composed by Whidbey Island’s Beverly Heising.

The Whidbey Island Youth Orchestra is open to musicians under 21 who have the basic musical skills for reading music and who would like to meet, play with and perform with other local young people. There are openings for all string and wind musicians. This year there are no auditions or audition fees.

The Whidbey Island Community Orchestra is open to more advanced, high-school-age musicians, with the conductor’s approval, and to all adults. There is no audition for adults. Individual players’ parts can be modified to give musicians of varying levels material that is fun, challenging and exciting. The aim is for all musicians to sound good as an ensemble in an enjoyable atmosphere. The Community Orchestra has openings in all sections.
