Fidalgo Youth Symphony awarded five scholarships at its spring concert May 21 at McIntyre Hall to high school seniors.

Criteria for scholarship selection include: commitment to FYS, musicianship, academics and community service.

David Holzemer of Anacortes was awarded $400 as the outstanding senior because of his longtime leadership and commitment to FYS as well his participation as concert master and string ensemble member.

Scholarships of $200 were given to Lydia Southard from Oak Harbor, Daniel Crawford from Anacortes, Mallory Hanson from Arlington and Clare Glackin of Mount Vernon. Fidalgo Youth Symphony just completed its 15th season as a nonprofit under the umbrella of the Anacortes Arts Foundation. It offers young musicians from Skagit, Island, Snohomish and Whatcom counties opportunities for music study and performance.

The symphony meets in Mount Vernon at Salem Lutheran Church for weekly rehearsals throughout the school year and performs fout concerts at McIntyre Hall. There are opportunities for ensemble work, community service, and students enrolled in Running Start may earn college and high school credit for participating.
