From its humble beginnings in 1998, Habitat for Humanity of Island County has grown into a healthy, county-wide nonprofit organization.
“We’re in a really good position right now — we’re just finishing up two townhomes in Oak Harbor and have several projects in various states of development. Of course with added projects comes the need for added funds and volunteers!” says Kathy Blair, Resource Development Director at Habitat for Humanity of Island County.
Island County Habitat has provided quality, affordable home ownership to more than 60 local families, and helped dozens more with critical repairs so they can safely remain at home. Homes are built in partnership with the family who will be moving in, and projects are completed thanks to the generosity of donors and volunteers.
Volunteers are needed year round, but this June, Island County Habitat is hosting a special event to raise funds, raise awareness, and raise spirits on Whidbey Island.
Women Build! June 4 in Oak Harbor
Help Habitat for Humanity of Island County, two ways in one!
- Help with critical home repairs. On the day of the build, volunteers will construct stairs, porches, ramps and perform other critical repairs for low income home owners in Oak Harbor. No building experience necessary! Mentors will be on site to teach volunteers how to safely use all equipment and lead the build. “Some volunteers may be a little hesitant at first, but once they get going there’s really great energy on site. It’s a lot of fun!” Kathy says.
- Raise funds for future builds. The minimum donation to participate in Women Build is $25, and funds will be used for materials for the Women Build projects as well as future home builds. Every participant will receive a commemorative Women Build 2022 t-shirt and lunch on June 4. Create your own fundraising page to raise awareness with friends and co-workers, and raise more funds for a great cause. Top fundraisers will earn extra prizes!
Women Build is a welcoming and inclusive space for all genders to come together to learn and laugh while building stronger, safer communities.
Women Build reunion and open house, May 28
At Women Build 2021, participants helped construct two townhouses. These homes are nearly complete, and last year’s Women Builders are invited to reunite at the jobsite and tour the completed homes. One of the homebuyer families will be there to thank the volunteers personally.
“It’s a great chance to reconnect with volunteers you met last year and see what we’ve been able to build thanks to the hard work of our volunteers,” Kathy says.
Other ways to help
Habitat for Humanity of Island County welcomes volunteers and donations year round. All donations stay right here in Island County to help build affordable homes for people in need. Volunteer as an individual or gather with friends or co-workers for a fun team building event.
Remember to shop at the Habitat Stores in Oak Harbor and Freeland! Both stores carry a wide range of donated home furnishings, and all proceeds support the Habitat vision of a world where everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home.
