If you’ve been looking for a fulfilling career that will keep you connected to your community and provide unique opportunity to meet some amazing individuals, a career working with seniors could be the perfect fit.
Welcome Home, Oak Harbor is currently filling full-time positions in their dietary and caregiver departments and Sandra Oldemeyer, Executive Director at Welcome Home, says working with seniors offers a wealth of benefits.
“When you work closely with seniors in a care facility environment they quickly become like family,” Oldemeyer says. “This makes for very fulfilling and rewarding work for us caregivers and it also means a lot to our residents. Unfortunately many seniors don’t have family members of their own who come in for regular visits, so they form very strong bonds with their care teams.”
Welcome Home offers a variety of long-term care solutions to seniors, including assisted-living care, memory care and palliative/hospice care services. Oldemeyer describes the environment at Welcome Home as inclusive and welcoming to people from all walks of life.
“We have a diverse population of caregivers and residents who live and work here,” she says. “We have valued team members who are differently-abled and residents with very diverse needs and capabilities of their own. This diversity is what makes us such a wonderful place to work and provides a safe, welcoming and comfortable environment for our residents.”
One of the most unique aspects of working with seniors, especially military veterans, is that they’ve seen so much change throughout their lives. Residents have lived through major world events like the Great Depression, world wars and massive societal shifts like going from radio, to black-and-white television, color television all the way to the modern world of smart phones and AI that we live in today.
“That experience, having lived such full lives and witnessed so many changes, has given them some pretty unique perspectives and an unmeasurable amount of wisdom,” Oldemeyer says.
