Anacortes eliminated the Central/South Whidbey Little League 11/12 softball team from the District 11 tournament with an 18-8 win in five innings at Oak Harbor’s Volunteer Park Monday, June 30.
In other Central Whidbey Little League action Monday, the 9/10 baseball team won 10-3 over Anacortes at Sedro-Woolley’s Kiwanis Fields to stay alive in the consolation bracket.
Central Whidbey takes on Sedro-Woolley at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, in a loser-out game.
The Central/South Whidbey 11/12 softball team scooted to a 7-0 lead, but Anacortes exploded for 12 runs in the second inning to take control.
Central Whidbey’s Hannah Davidson clubbed a double to help her team score four runs in the first inning.
Central/South Whidbey added three runs in the second inning, then its offense stalled and went hitless the rest of the way.
Anacortes sent 17 batters to the plate in the second inning, blending four hits, five walks and three errors to post its 12 runs.
Davidson finished with a double, two walks, a run and stolen base for Central/South Whidbey.
Central Whidbey’s Emma Somes and Maya Toomey-Stout each walked and scored a run.
Strong pitching and timely hitting helped Central Whidbey’s 9/10 baseball teqm take down Anacortes.
Scott Hilborn tripled early to keep Central Whidbey within one, 2-1, until the offense picked up late. The Central Whidbey hitters were patient and collected some walks, according to coach Steve Hilborn, setting up a five-run sixth inning. Cody Roberts nearly drove the ball to the wall to highlight the uprising.
Hilborn started on the mound and worked through a few errors by his defense. Then Roberts pitched into the fifth, at one point striking out the side in consecutive innings. Hawthorne Wolfe closed out the game in the sixth.
