More than 100 community members gathered Saturday to raise an estimated $28,000 for Coupeville High School seniors during the annual Coupeville Lions Scholarship Auction.
While the figures aren’t confirmed, scholarship chairman Dave Fish said the $28,000 estimate is more than what the auction raised in previous years.
The evening included a family-style barbecue meal, wine and beer served by Coupeville High School students. Two long tables were filled to the brim with various silent auction items donated by businesses and members of the community.
The live auction featured larger ticket items, including weekend getaways, a salmon barbecue hosted by Coupeville Mayor Molly Hughes and retired mayor Nancy Conard as well as an Octoberfest Wheneverfest at the Compass Rose Bed and Breakfast.
Lions Bob Clay and Dale Sherman led the live auction as in years past, coaxing out every nickel and dime they could.
The club is able to award between 20-26 scholarships to seniors each year. The scholarships are generally between $500 and $2,000 each and the club usually distributes around $24,000 each year.
Scholarships are awarded to students attending four-year universities as well as community colleges and trade schools. The club also offers special scholarships for students studying education, the environment, the arts, business and medicine.
Students apply for the scholarships through the high school and they are given out during an awards night this spring.
