For the second consecutive match, a four-goal rush by an opponent in the second half stung the Coupeville High School soccer team as it fell 4-1 to visiting Cedarcrest Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Coupeville (0-1, 0-2) gets a chance to rebound when it hosts Lakewood (0-1, 0-3) at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19.

The 1A Wolves were tied 0-0 at halftime against 3A Oak Harbor in the season opener before the Wildcats exploded in the second half for the 4-0 win.

Against 2A Cedarcrest, Coupeville led 1-0 at the break behind Marissa Etzell’s first career goal. The Red Wolves four-goal onslaught in the second half put the match away.

Coupeville coach Troy Cowan said, “At halftime we made a formation change to increase our opportunities on offense and the Red Wolves made us pay with several outstanding counter attack goals.”

The result could have been worse but keeper Julia Myers “made countless, heroic saves,” according to Cowen.

The young Wolves are experiencing some growing pains, Cowen said, and are “still figuring out each other and redefining our style of play.”

He added, “We are very proud of the steps the girls are making and the new formed chemistry that is obvious to all that watch the Lady Wolves on the pitch.

“I told the girls before and after the match this is a process and we are building something special and it will take time, but they all gave 100 percent and are going to be very dangerous in a very short time.”
