Get ready for lights and sirens. The 30th-annual National Night Out will be observed Tuesday, Aug, 6.
In Oak Harbor, the event known as “America’s Night Out Against Crime” will be 3-8 p.m. at Windjammer Park. It is geared towards children and families.
A wide swath of departments providing emergency services will once again participate. They include law enforcement from all over the island, fire departments, Navy security and other departments, and social service agencies.
Activities include a climbing wall, K-9 demonstrations, a crime scene investigations booth, a DUI crash demonstration, interactive displays, a family resources fair and food vendors.
National Night Out began in 1984 as an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back, according to organizers.
The Oak Harbor City Council meeting will be held Wednesday, Aug. 7, so it doesn’t conflict with National Night Out. Agenda items include a resolution supporting Whidbey Island Naval Air Station activities and a contract with Whidbey Animals’ Improvement Foundation for management of the animal shelter.
