Island County Habitat for Humanity is hosting Women Build Days and is looking for hammer-wielding women to help at a volunteer event Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Developed through the partnership between Lowe’s and Habitat for Humanity, National Women Build Week challenges women to devote at least one day to the effort to eliminate poverty housing, according to a new release from Habitat for Humanity of Island County. The two-day event is an initiative of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program, which is underwritten by Lowe’s, a national chain of building supply stores. It recruits, educates and nurtures women to build and advocate for simple, decent and affordable houses in their communities.

Organizers say the Mother’s Day timeframe was selected because of its significance to many volunteers, as families with children make up a large number of those in need of adequate housing. More than 12 million children, or one in six, live in poverty housing in the United States alone.

To date, women volunteers have built nearly 1,700 Habitat houses nationwide. This is the second Women Build event for Habitat for Humanity of Island County.
