Sofia Mottern and Nathanael Thompson are among the excited racers who rolled down Barrington Hill in the Challenge Series soapbox derby race Saturday. The race allows children with disabilities and their volunteer co-drivers to enjoy a fun-filled day of racing and activities. Everyone is a winner and receives a medal and goodie bag, said Penny Turvill, event organizer.
“The best part is the sheer joy the
kids get out of doing this and the looks on their faces as they come down the hill,” Turvill said. To mark the beginning of the race, a fire truck and police car went down the hill, lights flashing. Oak Harbor High School cheerleaders followed. Then the children zipped down the hill, all smiles, Turvill said.
This is the derby’s 19th year. The Rotary Club of North Whidbey-Sunrise sponsors the event.
