There is currently only one room in the Oak Harbor School District named after someone. That is Parker Hall, located at the high school.

Administrators are now preparing for the possibility of naming other rooms in the school district by researching and developing a policy for the naming process.

Superintendent Rick Schulte said the issue came up when some people expressed a desire to name several rooms at the high school when the renovation is complete. However, the school district doesn’t have any guidelines on how rooms would be named.

Parker Hall is named after Sid Parker, a teacher and school administrator.

Schulte said there is no record of any board action taken about naming the hall and the board members at the time didn’t make any comment about it, but somehow the room was named in Parker’s honor.

The school district did solicit donations to name specific parts of Wildcat Memorial Stadium. The only one to participate was Whidbey Island Bank, which donated $30,000 in return for the naming rights to the scoreboard.

The district hasn’t seen a flood of requests but could see interest increase as the idea becomes more public, school board member Peter Hunt said.

Board member David McCool said naming rooms would be a chance to recognize people who have been important to the school district.

“I see this as an excellent opportunity to recognize school employees who have served the community for years,” McCool said during a recent school board meeting.

Schulte said he will contact a few other school districts to see if there are existing policies for naming rooms. He said Cascade High School seems to have named every room in the school after somebody, so he will start there.

Even though the need for such a policy is not urgent, Schulte said he will come back to the board with some suggestions.
