Both lanes of Fort Casey Road were blocked Friday morning while Island County Sheriff’s deputies investigated a traffic accident.

At approximately 8 a.m., a late-model SUV, driven by Coupeville resident Lori Hillard, drove off the road and crashed into a power pole at the intersection of Fort Casey Road and Field View Lane, said Island County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Michler.

Power lines were knocked down when the pole toppled and landed on the road. Investigators waited for about an hour for a Puget Sound Energy employee to show up and clear the power lines for investigators.

Hillard was transported to Whidbey General Hospital where she is in stable condition.

Friday morning’s car accident knocked out power to one home, and a Puget Sound Energy spokesperson didn’t know when it would be restored.

Deputies are investigating what caused Hillard to drive off the road.
