BEACH CLEANING: Fort Casey Lighthouse Environmental Program is searching for a few good volunteers to help clean Island County beaches and parks. Equipment needed to do the job will be provided. An educational component concerning the dangers of plastic litter on both fish and beach wildlife will also be offered. Meet at 9 a.m. on the clean-up days, and expect to be finished by 11 a.m. If you or your group would like to volunteer, come out to the following beaches on the following dates: Nov. 9 – Fort Ebey, Nov. 30 – Ebey Road End, Dec. 14 – Double Bluff, and Dec. 21 – Fort Ebey. SMART GALS: American Association of University Women will meet at 9:30 a.m., Race Road Fire Station. A panel of business/professional women who achieved success in fields that were considered “for men only” will discuss their career experiences. Call (360) 331-1273.

VETERAN’S DAY: Help honor our veterans at the Oak Harbor Elks lodge, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a flag folding ceremony, drill team, honor guard, guest speakers and music. Lunch will be served for $8. If you know a vet who needs a ride to the ceremony call the lodge and arrangements will be made to pick them up. Call 675-7111.

NORDIC HARVEST: The Whidbey Island Nordic Lodge will host a harvest time dinner dance from 5 – 10 p.m., at the Freeland Grange Hall. Dance to the music of the Pickled Herring Band. A cod fish dinner will be served from 5 -6 p.m.Cost is $17.50 for dinner and dance; children under 12 are free, there will be hot dogs and punch available for the kids. BYOB and mixer.

DRUM LEGENDS: Museum of Northwest Art presents Kevin Paul, well-known carver and singer, with “Legends of the Drum” at 7:30 p.m., as a part of the museum’s ongoing poetry and painting program. Paul reflects his dual Swinomish/Colville heritage, as his music draws from the coastal Puget Sound and Eastern Washington, and his carvings are both traditional and contemporary. Legends of the Drum is held in conjunction with Rick Bartow: My Eye, which draws on Bartow’s native Yurok traditions to express human emotions, themes of spirituality and transformation. ROCK SHOW: Take your pet rock on a road trip to the 41st annual gem, mineral, fossil and jewelry show presented by Skagit Rock and Gem, at the Sedro-Woolley Community Center, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.Admission is free to this show of cut and polished gemstones, mineral specimens, carvings, fossils, jewelry and more. VET’S HOLIDAY: Local veteran’s associations will hold Veteran’s Day ceremonies at Maple Leaf Cemetery in Oak Harbor, with the program starting at 11 a.m. Scheduled guest speakers are NAS Whidbey Commanding Officer Capt. FALL FORUM: The Museum of Northwest Art (MoNA) fall forum continues today, Nov. 11, with “Spirituality on a Budget,” by John Federov, visual and sound artist. Raised as a Jehovah’s Witness, but of Navajo and Russian decent, Federov pointedly and humorously explores the commodification of nature and spirituality; Nov. 18 – “The Shaman Who Went into the Fire,” by glass artist Preston Singletary. Of Tlingit/Filipino heritage, Singletary merges traditional Italian glass techniques with Northwest Coast formline design. POTTERY HOUSE: Oak Harbor has a new potter, so come to an open house and meet Carol Rhodes, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., at 848 Burroughs in Oak Harbor. Rhodes is originally from Bothell, and creates unique, hand-carved designs. Sharon Tryon will also show her romantic impressions in watercolors and oils, including a series of umbrella paintings.

GRANNY DINNER: Come for soup, chili and homemade pies by the Oak Harbor Emblem Club during “Grannie’s Attic Tables,” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Elks lodge. There will be holiday and gift items, baked goods, and some private vendors. Raffle tickets are available. Proceeds go to local charities.

AFTER POLIO: The Whideby Island Post Polio Support Group will meet at 10 a.m., at 161 W. Whidbey Ave., in the “Whidbey Cottages” club house. Speakers will be a local fireman and paramedic.

CHEAPER AUDITIONS: Whidbey Playhouse will hold auditions for “Cheaper by the Dozen,” a delightful tale of a large and unique family, Nov. 16 and 17, from 1-4 p.m. both days. Roles are available for three women and two men, plus there are 11 youth roles (ages 9-17). All auditioners must come prepared with a short (two minutes or less) monologue, and must stay there for the entire audition time. Copies of suggested monologue pieces for the children’s roles as well as script excerpts that will be used for auditions are at the playhouse. For more information contact the playhouse at 679-2237.

WHIDBEY AKC: The Whidbey Island Kennel Club will host their annual back to back AKC licensed all breed dog show and obedience trials at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe, Nov. 16 and 17. Public is invited to observe and admire their favorite dogs and visit with experienced dog people. There will be a canine eye clinic, microchip clinic, and tattoo clinic held both days.
