A 45-year-old Anacortes man was critically injured after his girlfriend ran him over when he tried to stop her from driving drunk, according to Oak Harbor police.
Capt. Rick Wallace with the Oak Harbor Police said the incident occurred at about 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 29 in the parking lot of an apartment complex on SW Sixth Street.
According to Wallace, 54-year-old Kathy Holmwood, who lives in an apartment at the location, announced to her friends that she was going to drive to the store before it closed to get one last beer.
Her boyfriend, Gary Angus, walked out in front of her car, apparently to stop her from driving while she was intoxicated, Wallace said. Holmwood warned him to move or she would run him over. When he didn’t move, she ran him over and drove to the store, according to Wallace.
Angus, left lying on the blacktop, was critically injured. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of internal injuries. He was originally in critical condition and doctors weren’t certain he would survive, but he improved at the hospital, according to court documents.
Holmwood eventually returned to the apartment and was arrested. She told police she went to Safeway to buy cauliflower, but police found a single can of Hurricane High Gravity malt liquor in her car, according to a report by Oak Harbor Police Officer Mike Clements.
In addition, Clements wrote that he found hair and blood on the underside of Holmwood’s car.
Prosecutors charged Holmwood in Island County Superior Court Nov. 2 with first-degree assault and vehicular assault. Her bail was set at $250,000 at an Oct. 29 hearing.
