Another garage fire lights North Whidbey

The garage took some internal damage, but the structure remained intact.

Around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, North Whidbey Fire and Rescue responded to heavy smoke billowing from a garage at 4575 Woodland Circle. The structure was salvaged, and no one was injured.

“They stretched the line, put out the fire. Luckily, there wasn’t much fire going on at the time,” said Chief Christopher Swiger. “There’s a lot of smoke and heat.”

After firefighters identified and put out the remaining pockets of heat, Swiger said the fire was likely caused by equipment failure such as a printer overheating.

The garage took some internal damage, but the structure remained intact.

“(The homeowners) were very lucky,” Swiger said. “Another five minutes, and they’d’ve lost the whole thing.”

This is the second garage fire in two weeks on North Whidbey.

Battalion Chief Jobie Gause said the department sees more structure fires this time of year, often from chimneys and holiday cooking. He advises cleaning chimneys and testing smoke detectors.
