Aquajets dominate Excellence Meet | NWAC

Nearly doubling up its competition, the North Whidbey Aquatic Club won the Excellence Meet at Anacortes’ Fidalgo Pool March 17-18.

NWAC rang up 960 points to outdistance the Bellingham Bay Swim Team (585) and the host Thunderbird Aquatic Club (462).

Leading the Aquajets were high-point winners Jerrin Concepcion, Olivia Tungate, Ciara Hu and Cole Weinstein. Concepcion won all 10 of his individual events in the boys 10-and-under division and qualified for Age Group Sectionals and the Western Zone championships in the 50 back (34.91).

Weinstein won six events and swam to nine PRs including new PNS cuts in the 100 breast (1:02.89) and 200 individual medley (2:01.78). He also set a team record with Jacob Jepsen, Josh Jepsen and Michael McGinnis in the 400 relay (3:22.56) and received the team’s RelayBig Award.

Tungate won the girls 11-12 high-point, winning four events and becoming only the second Aquajet 11-year-old to join the Minute Club, going 59.47 in the 100 freestyle.

Hu won three events and swam to PRs in the 50 free (26.17), the 200 free (2:00.80) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.58).

Other event winners were Taliah Black, Jacob Jepsen, Joshua Jepsen, Kenneth Morrow, Laura Rosen and Bruce Vagt.

PNS gold cuts were achieved by Carlos Bishai, Cedric Cabigting, Joseph Gorman, Maira Sulin, Jeron Kosbar, Maya Krantz, Morrow, Autumn Robinson, Jacob Thompson and Vagt.

Bishai, JD Cabigting, Angele Dennen, Allison Hoffmire, Jeron Kosbar, Maya Krantz and Ashleigh Merrill earned PNS silver cuts.

Krantz received Swimmer of the Meet honors by swimming PRs in all nine individual events and relays, posting four Gold cuts and chopping as much as 13 seconds off her previous bests.

Other swimmers clocking 100 percent individual PRs were Bishai, Cabigting, Kosbar and Sulin

One-hundred percent relay PRs were set by Alex Benton, Bishai, Black, JD Cabigting, Concepcion, Nick Davis, Caitlin Dennen, Trina Desquitado, Breona Eisner, Micah Geist, Gorman, Angela Johnson, Kosbar, Krantz, Merrill, MacKenzie Rauen, Robinson, Noah Schroeder, Sulin, Christy Thompson, Jacob Thompson, Brett Vagt, Lauren Vagt, Molly Vagt and Jacob Zettle.

Competing for the first time were Jaedine Casey Cabigting, Kyle Coonan and Sara Rhodes.

NWAC next competes at the Age Group Sectional Championships in Federal Way March 30 to April 1, where it will field a team of eight.

The North Whidbey Aquatic Club is a competitive swimming program of the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District. It includes swimmers of all abilities and ages from 6 through college.

Tryouts occur Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the city pool from 4:25 to 5:10 p.m. New swimmers should be able to swim a length of the pool in freestyle and backstroke. The first two weeks are free.
