Hundreds of artisans from across the country are coming to Coupeville Saturday and Sunday to ply their wares and show their skills.

In its 47th year, the Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival features painters, sculptors, photographers, woodworkers and metal workers along with live music, great food and children’s activities.

A highlight of the festival is the Artists in Action tents located in the grassy field across the street from the Coupeville Recreation Hall. The tents will be filled with island-based potters and painters.

“I really wanted to focus on clay and the different techniques they use,” said Mary Leonard, who is co-chairing the Artists and Action portion of the festival. Oak Harbor clay worker Dan Ishler and Clinton potter Sharon Warwick are among the dozen artists who will be in action this weekend. Artists in Action goes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Surrounding the Artists in Action will be nearly 200 booths selling crafts ranging from high-end photography and glasswork to woodworking and copper fountains.

Grace Tiffany, who is coordinating the booths this year, said one crafter made art using recycled Corian countertops.

“I remember being struck by the fact that people are taking recycled materials and using them in interesting ways,” Tiffany said.

The booths will fill downtown Coupeville on Front, Alexander and Coveland streets.

The Coupeville Recreation Hall is the home of the juried art show and, just up the road from downtown Coupeville on Alexander Street, is the home of the stage, where bands such as the Starlings, Dana Lyons and Taarka will perform.

Children’s activities, fresh food and the Sunday morning artist reception takes place in the Coupeville Farmers Market area.

The Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival officially gets underway Friday night, Aug. 13, with a wine reception featuring Whidbey Island wines and artists. The reception takes place at the Coupeville Recreation Hall beginning at 7 p.m.

The town changed which streets that will be closed during throughout the weekend. The intersection of Alexander and Coveland streets will be closed because of the large number of festival-goers walking from Front Street to the live music on Alexander Street.

Front Street from Center Street to the Coupeville Wharf, Coveland Street from North Main Street to the Post Office and Alexander Street from the Coupeville Wharf to the municipal parking lot are also closed during festival hours.
