Unfortunately for Coupeville’s football team, Archbishop Murphy decided to finally put it all together Friday night.
The result: a 56-0 thumping of the Wolves on the ATM field.
Although the Wildcats were 3-1 going into their game with Coupeville, the Archbishop Murphy staff said they weren’t playing very well and felt the team was underachieving. That’s not a problem any more.
ATM rolled to a 50-0 halftime lead, amassing over 400 yards of offense in the first two quarters while completely shutting down the Wolves. For the game, the Wildcats put up over 500 yards of total offense to Coupeville’s 133.
The second half was played with a running clock. The mercy rule takes affect after a team goes on top 45-0.
Assistant coach Gary Smart said, “We fought and we fought and we fought. It was just like quick sand. The more we fought, the deeper we sank.”
The Wildcats were able to hold the Wolves’ top offense weapons, Justin Adams and Jason Bagby, in check. Adams finished with 48 yards rushing on 12 attempts, and Bagby was just six of 20 passing for 52 yards.
The Wolves were troubled by Archbishop Murphy’s speed and lack of tackling execution defensively. Assistant coach Gary Smart said, “They were way too fast for us.”
Coupeville had trouble containing Wildcat quarterback Austin VanderWel. He completed eight of nine passes for 121 yards, three touchdowns, and two PATs. He also had runs of 62 (for a TD) and 42 yards.
Smart said, “We had decent coverage, but he just threw the ball where only his receivers could catch them.”
Chad Brookhouse led the defensive effort with 12 tackles. Chase Griffin, Mitch Pelroy, and Adams each had eight.
Coupeville is now 3-2 for the year and 1-2 in league play.
The Wolves aim to get back on track Friday with a home game with Sultan.
To be successful, the Wolves will have to slow down quarterback Zach Bebee and his favorite target, Clayton Knoles. Bebee threw for nearly 300 yards last week against South Whidbey. Knoles leads the Cascade conference with 28 catches; he had eight for 211 yards against the Falcons.
Smart said that Bebee likes to throw deep and that the Wolves hope to put pressure on him and force him out of the pocket.
Offensively, the Wolves believe the Turks are vulnerable to the run and hope to get Adams and company going against the Sultan defense.
