An Oak Harbor man accused of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old child multiple times probably won’t be getting out of jail anytime soon, according to court records.

Island County Superior Court Judge Alan Hancock refused to lower bail for Lewis J. Browning during a court hearing held July 22. Bail for Browning was kept at $50,000.

Browning pleaded not guilty July 3 to one count of rape of a child in the first degree and two counts of child molestation in the first degree.

A pastor of an Oak Harbor church, along with Browning, reported the crime to police on July 29.

Browning admitted to police that he molested the 5-year-old boy repeatedly; he was at the boy’s home while visiting with older children, according to the police report.

Browning told an officer that “he knows what he did was wrong and that he wanted to change,” the report states. He told a detective that his father went to prison for molesting him.

Last week, Browning’s attorney asked for Browning’s bail wto be reduced, saying that he can stay at his mother’s house.

Deputy Prosecutor David Carman, however, pointed out that his mother has a young child in the home and Browning isn’t supposed to have contact with minors.

In addition, Carman said Browning may have molested a child when he was living in Ohio.

Hancock quickly agreed with the prosecutor.
