The Coupeville girls basketball team used the same recipe that Sultan used in defeating the Wolves last Friday to grab a 50-32 win over visiting Lakewood Tuesday.

Last Friday Sultan used a 17-4 second-quarter run to secure the lead and then started the second half with an 11-0 run to put the game away. Tuesday against Lakewood, Coupeville swamped the Cougars with a 14-4 second quarter burst, then started the third quarter on a 10-2 run to bury the visitors.

The win over the Cougars (0-5, 0-11) put the Wolves’ records at 3-4 and 8-5. Coupeville begins the second round of Cascade Conference play when it entertains Cedarcrest (4-2, 5-7) Friday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. The Red Wolves defeated Coupeville 45-33 in their first encounter.

The Wolves led Lakewood 8-5 at the end of the first quarter then went on their 14-4 streak to push the lead to double digits. They went into the locker room with a 26-12 bulge despite shooting just 7-27 in the first two quarters.

By the middle of the third quarter the lead was up to 20, 36-16, and the Wolves cruised home with the win.

Ashley Manker sparked the third-quarter surge with 10 of her team-high 15 points during the period. She overcame early foul trouble to hit three of six 3-pointers during the game and grab nine rebounds.

Cassidi Rosenkrance contributed with a solid all-around effort, scoring eight points, snaring 11 rebounds and handing out four assists.

Megan Smith scored 11 points and had six steals, Taya Boonstra added five points and three assists, and Marie Hesselgrave scored two points and collected eight rebounds.

Katie Smith, with four points, and Courtney Arnold, with two, rounded out the scoring.
