A quick stop at the berry stand near 7-Eleven on the south side of Oak Harbor Thursday afternoon ended badly for a couple visiting from Surprise, Ariz.
Ken and Helen Ellison had just purchased some strawberries and were getting back into their F-250 truck when 90-year-old David Horngren backed his Ford Windstar minivan into the truck’s left front wheel well.
Emergency personnel transported Helen, 73, to Whidbey General Hospital for X-rays, Ken said, adding that the minivan didn’t hit his wife, rather the van-on-truck impact threw her backwards onto the pavement. Ken, 75, was uninjured.
“I’m fine other than being extremely angry and concerned,” he said. “My wife was getting into the truck and this guy slammed on the accelerator.”
Horngren, the driver of the Windstar, was shaken, but uninjured.
“I had just bought a whole mess of strawberries and was backing out and my foot slipped off the brake,” he said.
Lt. John Dyer of the Oak Harbor Police Department said the accident was called in at 2:17 p.m.
