A science teacher at Oak Harbor Middle School who was seriously injured in a bike-versus-truck accident in Greenbank Saturday is recovering.

Christina Bromme, a 56-year-old Coupeville resident, was listed in satisfactory condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle Monday, according to a hospital spokesperson.

The driver of the pickup truck, 23-year-old Taylor C. Evans, of Coupeville, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault, according to Trooper Mark Francis with the Washington State Patrol.

Francis said investigators believe Evans may have been drinking prior to the collision.

According to the State Patrol, Evans was westbound in a 1997 Chevrolet S10 pickup on Bakken Road at about 7:30 Saturday night. He turned left into a private driveway in front of Bromme, who was eastbound on her bicycle.

The bicycle struck the passenger-side door of the truck and Bromme slid underneath, Francis said.

Maria Bromme, Bromme’s daughter, said her stepfather was bicycling right behind her and was “extremely quick” to jump into action. He asked for a car jack from a nearby residence and jacked up the truck; Christina was able to scoot herself out.

“It was also still light out at the time of the accident (my step-dad has a picture on his iphone) and my mom had plenty of reflectors and lights on her helmet and neon yellow jacket,” Maria Bromme wrote in a comment to the News-Times.

Bromme was wearing a helmet at the time. Evans’ pickup was impounded.
