Spurred by a 19-4 run to close the first half, Coupeville’s girls basketball team thumped visiting South Whidbey 55-29 Friday.

The Wolves led just 10-7 when they went on their big run. Ashley Manker fueled the burst with 16 points (including nine-for-nine at the free throw line) in the first two quarters.

Coupeville withstood a small rally by the Falcons in the third period and cruised to the win. Cayla Calderwood led South Whidbey (0-6) with 15 points; no other Falcon tallied more than four.

Manker was aided in the Coupeville scoring column by Megan Smith’s 13 points and Cassidi Rosenkrance’s 10. Smith also had eight steals, and Rosenkrance had five rebounds and four steals.

Katie Smith scored four points and grabbed five boards. Courtney Arnold scored four points, Kendra O’Keefe three, Taya Boonstra three and Marie Hesselgrave two.

The Coupeville win was the conference opener for both teams. The Wolves are now 5-1 and host Friday Harbor Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 4 p.m.
