One might not think a second year program would have too lofty of aspirations.

Goals don’t get much higher, however, than the one set by Coupeville boys soccer coach Melissa Martenak.

“Our goal is to get into state,” she said. “Of course you want to get to the championship game if you get there.

“That’s what I realistically tell the kids — that’s where we want to be.”

How could one feel so confident with a program that’s just in its second year of operation?

The answer is simple for Martenak who returns all her starting players from last year.

“I have everyone and then some,” she said. “We had some really good freshmen come up and we’re really excited about that.”

Not only is the entire team returning, but according to Martenak they worked hard over the summer attending camps with some even going to England to play.

In their first season, 2004, the Wolves went 9-8 and made the district tournament. They were eliminated by just one goal, losing 2-1 to eventual third place state finisher, Mount Vernon Christian.

Coupeville brings back every starting player from last season, including midfielders Jon Chittim, Mike Duke and Micah Einterz.

On defense the Wolves return Jack Armstrong and Micah Johnson, along with both goalkeepers Will Butela and Josh Adams.

In early-season practices Martenak has liked what she’s seen and knows things will just get better as the season goes on.

“In the beginning of the season of course you’re getting the kinks out, but by mid to the end of the season I expect the guys to perform to that best that they can and I think we’ll be at the top of our game then,” she said.

In order for Coupeville to achieve its aspirations in 2005 they will have to get through some tough competition in their own division, including Mount Vernon Christian.

Friday Harbor also shouldn’t go unnoticed. They won the Northwest A/B division last year and ended up taking fourth overall in state after losing to Mount Vernon Christian in the consolation finals.

“Friday Harbor was a fabulous team last year,” Martenak said.

Coupeville started the 2005 season on the road against Friday Harbor Thursday and hosted Overlake Friday.
