The 29th Annual National Night, a unique crime/drug prevention event, has been scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Windjammer Park, Oak Harbor.

The National Night Out campaign involves citizens, law enforcement agencies, emergency personal from Oak Harbor, Island County Sheriff’s Department, NAS Whidbey, social service agencies, civic groups, businesses and local officials from Island County. Other law enforcement communities represented will be the Washington State Patrol, U.S. Border Patrol, Homeland Security and FBI.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen community spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals letting them know that communities are organized and fighting back.

“Instead of doing the traditional block party, we invite the whole community to a party at Windjammer Park,” said Sgt. Cedric Niiro, Oak Harbor Police Department, and event committee chair.

Some of the events planned for the day include: life guard demonstration, NAS Whidbey K-9 demonstrations, NAS Whidbey Island SAR demonstration, DUI car crash demonstration and the  MWR climbing wall.
